Obama, Bush chummy as George W.'s White House portrait is unveiled

WASHINGTON - The Bushes were back in the White House on Thursday, cracking wise with U.S. President Barack Obama as a portrait of the 43rd president was unveiled in a friendly ceremony void of politics but rife with laughs.

Apparently not nursing any hard feelings that Obama has been maligning his record for the past four years, a cheerful George W. Bush made a rare public appearance to praise his hosts, his wife, Laura, and his new portrait.

"Thank you so much for inviting our rowdy friends to my hanging," Bush told the president and first lady Michelle Obama in the ornate East Room after a private lunch that included 14 members of his family, including his parents and children.

To an eruption of raucous laughter, he added: "I am also pleased, Mr. President, that when you are wandering these halls as you wrestle with tough decisions, you will now be able to gaze at this portrait and ask: 'What would George do?'"

The event was heavily attended by members of Bush's White House team, including strategist Karl Rove, onetime homeland security chief Tom Ridge and former secretary of state Colin Powell.

They were among those laughing hardest when Bush was particularly self-deprecating.

Obama too got some big laughs.

"George, I will always remember the gathering you hosted for all the living former presidents before I took office, your kind words of encouragement ... plus, you also left me a really good TV sports package," he said. "I use it."

Even the famously genteel Laura Bush ? described by her husband as "the greatest first lady ever" before apologizing to his mother, also a former first lady ? got into the act.

Her portrait was also unveiled on Thursday. Like her husband's, it was painted by artist John Howard Sanden.

"It was really gracious of you to invite us back to the White House to hang a few family pictures," Laura Bush told the Obamas. "And I'm sure you know nothing makes a house a home like having portraits of its former occupants staring down at you from the walls."

But she also sounded a serious, sentimental tone that left her twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, fighting back tears.

"I hope others will see in this portrait what I see: a woman who was honoured and humbled to live in the White House during a period of great challenge, and who will never forget the countless American faces who make up the true portrait of that time," she said.

By and large, remarks by Laura Bush and Michelle Obama reflected the well-documented affection between the two women.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Laura for providing such a wonderful model of strength and grace for me to follow as first lady," Michelle Obama said.

"It's just been amazing to learn from your example not just as a first lady, but as a mother of two wonderful daughters .... You've done a terrific job."

Obama too praised Bush for serving the country, adding that only a former president truly understands the difficulties of the job.

"In this job, no decision that reaches your desk is easy, no choice you make is without cost, no matter how hard you try, you're not going to make everybody happy," Obama said. "I think that's something that President Bush and I both learned pretty quickly."

It was a veritable love-in considered Obama has long blamed Bush's economic policies for causing a devastating economic recession that lingers to this day. He's also warned that his current rival for the White House, Mitt Romney, would offer more of the same.

As recently as a week ago, Obama assailed Romney for an economic platform he said rewards the wealthy at the expense of the poor.

"That was tried, remember? The last guy did all this," Obama said.

And yet it's hardly the first time current and past presidents have hit it off, despite their public, political differences.

According to a new book, "The President's Club," Herbert Hoover and Harry S. Truman had a tight relationship.

In 1962, John F. Kennedy asked his predecessor, Dwight D. Eisenhower, for advice during the Cuban missile crisis.

And Bush's father, 41st president George H. W. Bush, once famously said he viewed Bill Clinton as another son despite the fact that the former Arkansas governor deprived him of a second term. George W. is also fond of Clinton, the 42nd president.

"Listen, Clinton and I are buddies," Bush said two years ago. "First of all, we're born one month apart. We're now members of the former presidents club. We have done speaking engagements together. And I generally like him."

Clinton, for his part, has waxed poetic about Richard Nixon, according to "The President's Club." Speaking to the book's authors last year, Clinton said Nixon gave him top-notch advice on Russia, adding he annually reread a letter on the subject from the former president.

Anger Over Christine Lagarde's Tax-Free Salary | MTR

It was called her ?Let them eat cake? moment. Now Greece will be saying: ?Make her pay tax?.

The IMF chief Christine Lagarde was accused of hypocrisy yesterday after it emerged that she pays no income tax ? just days after blaming the Greeks for causing their financial peril by dodging their own bills.

The managing director of the International Monetary Fund is paid a salary of $467,940 (?298,675), automatically increased every year according to inflation. On top of that she receives an allowance of $83,760 ? payable without ?justification? ? and additional expenses for entertainment, making her total package worth more than the amount received by US President Barack Obama according to reports last night.

Unlike Mr Obama, however, she does not have to pay any tax on this substantial income because of her diplomatic status.
The news will intensify criticism of the former French Finance Minister following her controversial remarks on the increasingly bleak prospects for the Greek economy last week. Stating that she had more sympathy for poor African children with little education than for jobless people complaining about austerity measures in Greece, she said last week: ?As far as Athens is concerned, I also think about all those people who are trying to escape tax all the time. All these people in Greece who are trying to escape tax.?

Speaking to The Guardian, she added that they could ?help themselves collectively? by ?all paying their tax,? and agreed that it was ?payback time? for ordinary Greeks.

Ms Lagarde is entitled, like many diplomats, to receive her income net thanks to the 1961 Treaty of Vienna. David Hawley, a spokesman for the IMF, said: ?Christine Lagarde pays all taxes levied on her, including local and property taxes in the US and France. Fund salaries, like those in most international organisations, are paid on a lower, net of tax basis to ensure equal pay for equal work regardless of nationality.

The Business Model Innovation Factory: A Review.

Innovation is one of those classic Rorschach words.?

When viewed through the lens of popular media, it?s mostly about disruptive product innovation -- like Apple?s IPAD. But the long tail of innovation is also about companies like Rosetta Stone, the leading language instruction platform.? Rosetta Stone?s innovation is more about pricing and innovative distribution through kiosks in airports and malls.

Innovation can occur at virtually any touchpoint in an organization -- and perhaps one of the most powerful is business model innovation.? It?s how a business or an organization creates, delivers, and captures value.

Saul Kaplan, Chief Catalyst of the Business Innovation Factory (BIF), has taken his eight-year journey with BIF and his lifetime passion for strategic innovation and turned it into a remarkable and provocative new book: The Business Model Innovation Factory:? How to Stay Relevant When the World is Changing.

The premise of Kaplan?s book is a reflection of economic realities.? ?The half life of a business model is declining,? he writes.? ?Business models just don?t last as long as they used to. In the twenty-first century, business leaders are unlikely to manage a single business model for an entire career.?

Kaplan?s advice: Don?t get Netflixed.

The keystone story of The Business Model Innovation Factory is how the behemoth and successful Blockbuster got toppled because of a superior business model -- Netflix.

Blockbuster didn?t see the emergence of DVD technology as a threat to their business model.? They saw DVDs as a sustaining technology to improve the performance of their current bricks and mortar model.?

?Netflix didn?t invent any new technology,? says Kaplan.? ?What Netflix invented was new business model -- the ability for customer to avoid the trip to the video store by delivering the DVD by mail. ? Eliminating the pay per rental model and substituting a subscription platform with unlimited rentals and no due dates further enhanced the business model.

Blockbuster saw Netflix coming and chose to underestimate them at first and then reacted way too slowly.?

Kaplan believes that most organizations fail at business model innovation because they are ?so busy pedaling the bicycle of their current business models they leave not time, attention or resources to design, prototype, and test new ones.?

Kaplan adds, ?Most organizations also fail at business model innovation because if overreliance on tweaks.? Almost every company I visit has a crazy number of well-intentioned initiatives going on across the organization.?? He calls this pervasive phenomenon ?death by 1,000 initiatives.?

The heart of The Business Model Innovation Factory is 15 business model innovation principles organized around the business model innovation mantra:? Connect. Inspire. Transform.

What sets Kaplan?s book apart from the myriad books on innovation, is that it not an ivory tower book.? Kaplan and his colleagues the Business Innovation Factory in Providence, RI have transformed these principals into action in four key experience labs: education, entrepreneurship, energy and elder care.

At BIF, action is a verb.? They believe in implementing and evaluating ideas in real world scenarios working in partnership with both private and public organizations. Kaplan and his team do better than walk the talk, they dance the talk.

The Business Model Innovation Factory isn?t a book to be placed on the shelf.? It?s a book that should be on your desk and top of mind.? It gives you an impressive array of tools to create your own business innovation factory.

If you want to stay relevant in changing times.

If you want to avoid getting Netflixed.

If you want to get inspired about the possibilities.?

If you want to connect the dots when it comes to transformative innovation.

Then pick up a copy of The Business Model Innovation Factory.?

Nissan throws veil off futuristic and pleasingly energy-efficient e-NV200 electric van

Remember how vans and people-movers used to be chunky and look as trashy as possible? Well, things seem to have changed these days and Nissan has just given us a sneak peek at the van of the future, the electricity-powered e-NV200. Somewhat reminiscent of its cousin, the Nissan Leaf, this van is based on the NV200 van that Nissan currently manufacturers, with the gas-powered insides ripped out, making way for an energy efficient drive-train. Also, production of this van will begin next year with Nissan planning to invest $126 million in the Barcelona plant, hiring more than 700 workers in the bargain!

Fighting Off Rock Bottom: Union Face Winless Toronto

Last weekend's MLS action offered little comfort for local fans who were either worried about the Union's ability to make positive headway or angry at the team's decision to trade Danny Califf. The U struggled through a first half they were lucky to have played against a mediocre Dallas side that was missing a handful of regulars, though the Union's somewhat more cohesive second half effort and salvage of a point was a hell of a lot better than an outright loss.?

Immediately after that game concluded,?Califf's debut with Chivas USA began and was televised nationally. Califf, who'd previously been deemed too injured to play for the Union and even publicly debated the fact amidst tensions with Peter Nowak, was instrumental in Chivas' first win over the LA Galaxy since 2007. The former Union captain was named Man of the Match in the 1-0 victory. While I couldn't have been happier to see Califf succeed, the night begged to be labeled "bittersweet."?

It's in the past now, and the Union face Toronto FC (0-9-0) at 4:30 [TCN] on the banks of Lake Ontario. Will they take three points from possibly the worst team in North America, who also happen to be the Canadian champions??

The Union could use a decisive victory, even against a team that so far can't beat anyone. But from the depths of Toronto, your eye doesn't have to travel too far up the table to find Philadelphia, who are in second place with only 8 points (2-6-2) of their own. So let's not chalk this up as anything just yet? Toronto fans are probably saying there's no better opportunity for their side to earn their first points of the season. ?

Last Week Rewinder

My worries heading into the Dallas match and the start of the post-Califf era were somewhat widespread, but for the purposes of the on-field product, I hoped they wouldn't miss his height on the backline. Before 8 minutes were off the clock, they were beaten on a corner, with 6'1 striker Blas Perez heading home a volley in the box. While Califf's presence didn't stop those same things from happening while he was with the Union, Keon Daniel was clearly overmatched and miscast in trying to slow Perez on a few set pieces in this one.?

The Union lacked any consistent or threatening form in the first half, which isn't a surprise given a few key absences. Chase Harrison filled in admirably for the concussed Zac MacMath, taking a sound physical beating but withstanding the barrage after Perez's early goal. Newcomer Michael Lahoud was mixed into the starting XI, as Peter Nowak likes to get the new blood flowing as soon as its the kit. Not sure I agree with the logic, particularly in a match that already had a few key players out for the Union. The second half featured more control by the Union though, who equalized and narrowly missed on some solid opportunities that would have put them ahead.?

The latter 45 minutes were an overall good sign heading tonight's Must Win Or It Will Be Completely Embarrassing tilt with Toronto.?

Kings of the North(?)

TFC will also be looking to build on success from their last time out. Although they have lost all of their MLS matches this season, they did beat Vancouver, 1-0, on Wednesday in CONCACAF play to take the Canadian Championship. Again, they may not be the pushover you might expect from a team looking to avoid a tenth straight loss to start the season.?

Toronto's offense has scored only seven goals through nine matches, and the team has conceded 21. Their offense is underachieving so far, which is to say, they're not quite as bad as their results have been. Kevin Kinkead points out that designated player Danny Koevermans has missed time due to a groin injury, while fellow DP Ryan Johnson has missed all but one of his 28 shots.?

The last time the Union were in Toronto, they put together their most explosive effort in the young franchise's history, winning 6-2. However, with all the turnover since that time, it's a stretch to apply anything from that match to this one. Remember these guys??That was a year and 2 days ago. The various factors affecting both sides in the current season to date the only things worth looking to for an idea of how this matchup will work out.?

Re-Union

Peter Nowak hopes to have MacMath back in goal today afters sitting out last match with concussion symptoms. Harrison is not available, which is no surprise given how often the physical match against Dallas involved decleating contact with the Union backup. [UPDATE: @thegoalkeeper says MacMath is out again, so Chris Konopka is the man for the Union...]

Gabriel Gomez scored the Union's lone goal last weekend, but a late, hard, arial leg-whipping from Dallas keeper Kevin Hartman on the play cost Gomez the rest of the match with a quad injury:

No word as of this posting as to whether Gomez will play tonight, but after the game, he will leave the Union, answering a call-up from his Panama national team for World Cup qualifying. [UPDATE: He's out.]

Getting Freddy Adu back should significantly help the Union's chances of getting a result. He was playing his best match with the Union against NY Red Bulls two weekends ago when he was issued his second yellow card, a BS diving call that also forced his absence in Dallas. With Adu back, Nowak will likely look to attack with two strikers (presumably Danny Mwanga and Lio Pajoy), with Adu pulling the strings against a shoddy defense that should find itself overmatched by a Union attack that has shown signs of life in this formation. He also resumes the majority of the free kicks and corners, another area Keon struggled to fill in last week. Nothing against Keon, one of our favorite players here at the Level, but hopefully the returning players allow his game to focus on its strengths.?

Carlos Valdes was bloodied in Dallas, but Nowak has said he's fine to play today. With his former centerback partner gone, Valdes gets the captain's armband and control of the backline. They're in good hands with #5. Sheanon Williams will presumably lineup inside with him again, a miscasting of his size and speed, but the team is limited in its CB options. The expensively disappointing Porfirio Lopez could see his season salvaged as an interior defender, but for now, he's still a reserve.?

In this particular matchup, the team's desire to play its defenders high should provide the desired benefit of sustained attacks against a weak defensive opponent, without quite as much potential for counterattack as most other MLS sides. We hope, anyway.?

The Union could really use a full-game effort, rather than the good-half/bad-half efforts we've seen recently. We'll try to update with Nowak's chosen lineup if we're still in front of computers when it's released. Planning on watching this one through the smoke of a barbecue...?

Parents' dilemma: Let children play football?

Already uneasy about the idea of letting her 7-year-old son Jason start playing tackle football, Elizabeth Giancarli made up her mind when former NFL star Junior Seau committed suicide.

While many of her son's friends are moving on to tackle, he'll be playing another year of flag football.

"I just couldn't put him in tackle football, only because of everything that's been going on," Giancarli said. "I think that the Junior Seau suicide really hit home, too. So we decided to put him in another year of flag, because the impact is significantly less."

Giancarli hasn't ruled out the possibility of letting her son play tackle when he gets older. But she hopes he won't want to.

"I hate to take that experience away from him, especially since we all love the game so much," Giancarli said. "But I just don't know if it's worth it."

That's a tough thing to say for Giancarli, a Tampa Bay Buccaneers season-ticket holder who drives all the way from the Fort Lauderdale area to attend games. But she's among parents nationwide who have felt compelled to reconsider whether football is safe enough for their children amid a steady flow of reports on the potential long-term effects of repeated head injuries, an ever-growing list of concussion lawsuits filed by former NFL players against the league, and the New Orleans Saints bounty controversy.

Plus, now, the death at age 43 of Seau, a star linebacker for two decades.

Although it is not clear why Seau killed himself earlier this month, his death advanced what already was an uncomfortable national conversation about the hidden consequences of playing football.

And while it is too early to establish a link between parents' safety concerns and football's popularity, there are indications that fewer kids across the country are putting on pads.

Research from the National Sporting Goods Association indicates overall football participation across all age ranges has decreased from 10.1 million in 2006 to 9 million in 2011, with the most significant drops in the 12-17 and 18-24 age groups.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, the number of high school boys playing 11-man football rose from 886,840 in 1992-93 to 1,112,303 in 2008-09. But after 16 years of nearly uninterrupted growth, the number of players has declined slightly during the two most recent years for which data was available: to 1,109,278 in 2009-10 and 1,108,441 in 2010-11. The number of youths participating in less common forms of the game ? 9-player, 8-player and 6-player football ? also fell slightly in the two most recent years available.

The decline doesn't appear to be a function of school budget cutbacks. According to the NFHS data, the number of high schools offering 11-player football continues to increase.

NFHS director of sports and sports medicine Bob Colgate says the small decline hasn't raised red flags among high school sports administrators and may be the result of normal fluctuation in class sizes.

Dr. Michael Koester, a pediatric sports medicine specialist in Eugene, Ore., who has advised the NFHS, says it's too early to connect a downward trend with parents' safety concerns ? but says the numbers are worth watching, especially in youth football.

"I think it would be difficult to read anything into that at this point," Koester said. "I think we really have to look at what those high school numbers do over a four- or five-year period of time. And maybe more importantly at this time would be trying to get an idea from Pop Warner, from USA Football, see what's happening at the lower levels. I think if we're going to see a culture shift from a participation standpoint, I suspect that we're going to see it more at those lower levels, where parents are going to be deciding there's just no reason for their 7-, 8- or 9-year-old to be out there playing.

"And frankly, I support them in that. My son didn't start playing until he was 12."

USA Football says participation in youth football has been relatively stable in recent years, at about 3 million kids ? but USA Football executive director Scott Hallenbeck acknowledges that may change, given parents' concerns about safety.

"My sense of it is, we're going to see a drop in participation," Hallenbeck said.

Hoping to ease those concerns, USA Football ? a national organization founded by the NFL and the NFL Players Association ? has put safety measures in place in recent years for the youth leagues that have joined its membership. USA Football-affiliated coaches must take a training class and pass a test, then follow specific instructions that include proper equipment fitting, an age-specific approach to teaching tackling and other techniques, and limits on contact in practice.

This fall, USA Football will launch what Hallenbeck believes is the first comprehensive study on injuries in youth football.

"Clearly, there's a concern, and we have been proactive on that for five or six years," Hallenbeck said.

Dr. Shayne Fehr, a pediatric/adolescent concussion specialist at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, said more parents are expressing safety concerns to him.

"I had a patient this past week, he came in with his second concussion," Fehr said. "I believe he was about 14 years old, and his mother said ? before he even got a chance to talk ? that he's done with football."

Yet Fehr also said such dramatic declarations are rare.

"You have to remember that a lot of times, these families have grown up with sports such as football," Fehr said.

Former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner caused a stir recently when he said he worried about his own children playing football, but he's not the only ex-pro with reservations. For ex-NFL safety Matt Bowen, there aren't easy answers when it comes to balancing safety concerns against the positive things kids can learn from football.

"But I've had this conversation with my wife quite a bit, and I know in our house, our boys aren't going to play youth football," Bowen said. "My wife's already taken care of that. That's just not going to happen."

Bowen, who now writes columns for the Chicago Tribune and the nationalfootballpost.com website, gets a lot of questions from fellow fathers.

"I tell them that I love the game," Bowen said. "I respect everything I learned from the NFL, and in college and in high school. I don't think there's a better sport out there in terms of teamwork. I really don't, in terms of learning how to deal with some adversity that you deal with in real life. But I also tell them I got beat up a lot, had a lot of injuries. People ask about concussions all the time. 'What do you think? What's your stance on it?' A lot of times I just change the discussion. You're out drinking beer with some dads and they ask you, you talk about it a little bit. Yeah, I think it's violent. I think it's violent and I think it's made for young men, not little boys."

Kia LaBracke experienced that violence firsthand when her son, Nico, sustained a concussion from a big hit he took while returning a punt in a freshman football game in Oconomowoc, Wis. last fall. It took him months for him to recover and return to school full-time, leaving LaBracke and her husband, John, to make a difficult decision: They weren't going to let him play again.

"We knew it was going to be very tough," LaBracke said. "Because he's very dedicated to the sport, he's a very hard worker. This was his thing. A lot of his identity, who he was and who he is, was tied up in that."

LaBracke, who had a working knowledge of concussion issues through her job as the executive director of the Wisconsin chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, said her son didn't take the decision well.

"On an intellectual level, of course he understands," LaBracke said. "He would never say that, but of course he understands it. But I still don't think he's quite let go of the feeling that this is really unjust."

Now Nico's younger brother, Jack, is playing.

"But we've told him flat-out, we don't know how long this is going to last," LaBracke said. "We may cut this off at any point. And he understands it, because he watched what his brother went through. He was there when Nico came home and didn't know who his own brother was. I don't think he would be surprised if we pulled the plug at any point."

Chicagoan Erin O'Leary has told her 7-year-old son, Liam, that he can't play tackle for now. And she's hearing similar thoughts from fellow parents.

"Some of them are just like, 'Oh, well, they don't hit that hard at this age and it's not a big deal,'" O'Leary said. "But some like me, you keep seeing things on the news, reports that are released, and it is cause for concern. I mean, sports are great. I think there's a definite place for them, but long-term brain damage is not worth it. They have a long life ahead of them to do a lot of things."

Denver Green Jobs Initiative helps the unemployed find work

Barney Henderson, who learned to install insulation, explains how to put a fiberglass cover on pipes last week at the Denver Green Jobs Initiative, 3532 Franklin St. (Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post)

Before Barney Henderson began training at the Denver Green Jobs Initiative in July 2010, he had never heard of employment opportunities in heat and frost insulation. The past few years, Henderson, like other struggling Americans, dealt with the country's economic malaise on a daily basis as best he could.

"I'd work various day labor jobs here and there, but the money was never much and definitely never consistent," said Henderson, a native of Denver.

Tack on that he's black and has a nonviolent felony conviction from the early 1990s, and the 43-year-old quickly fell into the growing number of individuals that statistics show are chronically unemployed.

As President Barack Obama is set to deliver a nationally televised speech to Congress this evening that outlines a jobs plan to reduce the 9.1 percent national unemployment rate, here in Colorado the president faces a complex situation: high minority unemployment and a relatively minute expansion in the green-jobs initiative he has touted as a catalyst to combat unemployment.

Recently the Obama administration has garnered public backlash from members of the Congressional Black Caucus as unemployment among blacks nationwide surged to 16.7 percent in August, its highest level since 1984.

"The Congressional Black Caucus loves the president," said U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, a California Democrat and member of the caucus, at a job fair last month. "We're supportive of the president, but we're getting tired. .?.?. The unemployment is unconscionable."

The 2010 annual average for unemployment in Colorado was 9 percent. For blacks and Latinos, it was 13 percent. But Henderson has become a success story of sorts ? a minority who has found work from the president's efforts to combat unemployment through more green jobs.

Still, upward mobility in the green-job sector in Colorado is small and by most accounts is unlikely to put a substantial dent in unemployment.

Michael Suitt, 32, tests a blower door last week at the construction laboratory at the Denver Green Jobs Initiative. The blower door is used to detect air leaks in buildings. (Hyoung Chang, The Denver Post)

2.8% of Colorado jobs green

According to a study released in July by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, 2.8 percent of Colorado jobs are green jobs.

Nationwide, clean-energy jobs account for 2 percent of employment, according to a nonpartisan Brookings Institution study released this summer.

This comes even after the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 ? which Obama signed into law at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science ? doled out hundreds of millions of dollars in Colorado to stimulate the green economy.

For example, the act provided a roughly $370 million loan guarantee last year to Abound Solar Manufacturing, making the Loveland-based company one of the top state recipients of stimulus funds.

The company was slated to create 300 jobs in Colorado from the money, but as of this month it had filled a little more than 80, said Becky Ellzey, marketing and communications director for Abound. The company also has a facility in Indiana that benefits from the loan.

U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., who sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, said the president has been too exclusive in his push for green jobs.

"Any job is a good job in this economy, but the challenge is that the market will only create those jobs when it can bear them," Gardner said, who is a green-jobs supporter. "I think that the president believes that the government can create markets, when in actuality the fact is that the market will embrace these technologies when it's ready for them."

Initiative sprang from grant

Soon after Henderson heard about the creation of the green-jobs initiative that specifically targeted his northeast Denver neighborhood, he pounced on the opportunity to better himself and obtain the skills needed to find stable work.

The initiative sprang from a $3.6 million grant through the recovery act.

The intention of the grant money ? dispersed to the local nonprofit Mi Casa, which helped write the grant proposal ? is to train 500 northeast Denver residents in a two-year span for jobs in solar technology energy, green construction, energy efficiency and green-jobs administration.

When Henderson completed the program, which on average takes four weeks, he began working various contracting jobs doing insulation that paid about $17 an hour.

It was the highest hourly rate he had ever made.

"The skills I learned from the initiative were geared specifically toward the green-jobs field, and it's helped me," Henderson said.

But even as the initiative touts that by hiring disadvantaged groups employers can receive tax credits of up to $9,000 per hire, the percentage of individuals who graduate from the program and are employed is relatively low.

To date, 425 have graduated from the city's green-jobs initiative that began last year and ends in January 2012. Of that, 139 ? roughly 33 percent ? are now employed.

Green economy still young

Rick Lawton, the initiative's project manager, said the green economy remains in its infancy and represents a trend that is relatively new.

"What we're giving people are transferable skills that can be used in a green economy and beyond," he said.

Gardner adds that green jobs have tremendous potential in combating unemployment, as do more traditional energy opportunities, such as the extraction of natural gas.

"Here in Colorado and across the nation, we can't isolate our focus," Gardner said. "We have to utilize all our resources."

Teaching Techniques in Recent Times

Teacher training courses have not only gained importance in recent times but are mandatory to keep in line with the new techniques, policies and regulations that influence how we teach our kids. Various sorts of teacher training courses are designed to cater to the individual levels at which the teacher wishes to teach. These courses not only impart the basic know-how to the aspirant teachers, but also help to equip them with the psychological and emotional understanding of children and thus, groom them to understand and impart knowledge in a way best suitable for children at various stages of life.

India is the second largest populated country in the world and the market for teaching jobs India is particularly substantive and is ever-growing.

The Government of India is also increasing its? expenditure on education and the number of public and private schools is also seeing a steady growth along with the openings for teaching jobs India. More often than not, the prerequisite of these jobs is a proper Teacher training course from a reputed Institute. It is also to be remembered that with the advent of globalization, the English language has gained immense significance and is used as a global language to communicate with people from different states and backgrounds. More and more people find it of utmost importance to have their children well-versed in English and teachers who find themselves unable to communicate effectively in English, should undergo a teacher training course to be able to keep up with the changing times.

Just like there is no dearth of teaching jobs India, there is also no scarcity when it comes to teaching jobs abroad. Education and the skill sets required to instruct are required world-wide. There are still many nations like India, who find it necessary to train the young generation in today?s lingua franca, English. Taking up teacher training jobs as a profession is very beneficial for people, who are fond of traveling and enjoy exploring various parts of the world. Teaching is both enjoyable and a valuable experience while being a steady source of income. People, who travel abroad for staying closer to relatives or those who go abroad for higher education, often take up teaching as a profession, which will never go out of fashion and is also very satisfying at a personal level. Teacher training jobs abroad are not only available for higher levels but also for pre-school and primary levels and experienced teachers with proper training courses in their kitty, are consistently hired from foreign nations.

Even though teaching jobs are in abundance abroad and in India, teaching is never to be considered lightly. To nurture the minds of young and to mature and educate their thought process and over-all being requires a lot of determination, persistence and specialized skills. To face these demands of teaching, aspirants and already accomplished teachers must go through the suitable teachers? training courses and stay afloat with the needs of changing times and face the youth confidently.

This is what Fatherhood Means ? slightly_grumpy - My Telegraph

This is what Fatherhood Means

Frightfully bad form to put another piece on the front page when an earlier one is still there, but I do have to tell you what I have been up to for the last few hours. Please forgive me.

My youngest came back from school saying his housemaster had said any boy whose shoes were not perfectly clean tomorrow would be kept in for an hour. I rose to the occasion. I have devoted several hours to polishing his shoes (and his older brother?s even though the older boy?s housemaster is not so obsessive).

I remember a family friend (he was quite a distinguished Tory MP) telling me about how he used to creep up to his 23 year old son?s bedroom late at night, find his shoes and then polish them. He was convinced the lad would never succeed as a barrister unless his shoes were very shiny. The boy is now a very successful QC.

I may not be very good at the maths homework, but I can polish shoes.

It's in the genes: Research pinpoints how plants know when to flower [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 25-May-2012

Scientists believe they've pinpointed the last crucial piece of the 80-year-old puzzle of how plants "know" when to flower.

Determining the proper time to flower, important if a plant is to reproduce successfully, involves a sequence of molecular events, a plant's circadian clock and sunlight.

Understanding how flowering works in the simple plant used in this study Arabidopsis should lead to a better understanding of how the same genes work in more complex plants grown as crops such as rice, wheat and barley, according to Takato Imaizumi, a University of Washington assistant professor of biology and corresponding author of a paper in the May 25 issue of the journal Science.

"If we can regulate the timing of flowering, we might be able to increase crop yield by accelerating or delaying this. Knowing the mechanism gives us the tools to manipulate this," Imaizumi said. Along with food crops, the work might also lead to higher yields of plants grown for biofuels.

At specific times of year, flowering plants produce a protein known as FLOWERING LOCUS T in their leaves that induces flowering. Once this protein is made, it travels from the leaves to the shoot apex, a part of the plant where cells are undifferentiated, meaning they can either become leaves or flowers. At the shoot apex, this protein starts the molecular changes that send cells on the path to becoming flowers.

Changes in day length tell many organisms that the seasons are changing. It has long been known that plants use an internal time-keeping mechanism known as the circadian clock to measure changes in day length. Circadian clocks synchronize biological processes during 24-hour periods in people, animals, insects, plants and other organisms.

Imaizumi and the paper's co-authors investigated what's called the FKF1 protein, which they suspected was a key player in the mechanism by which plants recognize seasonal change and know when to flower. FKF1 protein is a photoreceptor, meaning it is activated by sunlight.

"The FKF1 photoreceptor protein we've been working on is expressed in the late afternoon every day, and is very tightly regulated by the plant's circadian clock," Imaizumi said. "When this protein is expressed during days that are short, this protein cannot be activated, as there is no daylight in the late afternoon. When this protein is expressed during a longer day, this photoreceptor makes use of the light and activates the flowering mechanisms involving FLOWERING LOCUS T. The circadian clock regulates the timing of the specific photoreceptor for flowering. That is how plants sense differences in day length."

This system keeps plants from flowering when it's a poor time to reproduce, such as the dead of winter when days are short and nights are long.

The new findings come from work with the plant Arabidopsis, a small plant in the mustard family that's often used in genetic research. They validate predictions from a mathematical model of the mechanism that causes Arabidopsis to flower that was developed by Andrew Millar, a University of Edinburgh professor of biology and co-author of the paper.

"Our mathematical model helped us to understand the operating principles of the plants' day-length sensor," Millar said. "Those principles will hold true in other plants, like rice, where the crop's day-length response is one of the factors that limits where farmers can obtain good harvests. It's that same day-length response that needs controlled lighting for laying chickens and fish farms, so it's just as important to understand this response in animals.

"The proteins involved in animals are not yet so well understood as they are in plants but we expect the same principles that we've learned from these studies to apply."
