Lions install new president, present awards

PLANT CITY --

Members of the Plant City Lions Club recently held their annual awards ceremony and installation banquet at The Catering Company Caf?.

The evening included the conclusion of Gail Lyons' term as president. She handed the gavel over to incoming president Kerri Gafford.

The following awards were presented at the June 26 ceremony: Lion of the Year, Michael Cameron; President Award and 1st Vice President Award, Gafford; 2nd Vice President Award, Steve Nierman; 3rd Vice President Award, Jason Jones; Secretary Award, Brian West; and Treasurer Award, Mark Cornett

Al Berry, Bob Fulks, Lee Williams and Jean Ann Davenport were presented with a special recognition award. The Leo special award went to Lilianna Reyes and Lyons received the past president award.

The special presenter at the ceremony was Bill Ringelstein, past council chair for the Lions. Second Vice President District Governor-Elect Judy Guam and District Governor Dean Hess were also present at the event.

Lyons remembered members who are recently deceased, including Ronald Baker, Paul Causey, Ed Martin, Ray Egbert, Juanita Ayscue and Lorean Barger.

FORT SUMNER, N.M. (AP) - The tombstone of famous outlaw Billy the Kid has been vandalized in New Mexico.

KOB-TV reports ( http://bit.ly/LiG4ja) that the 2000-pound gravestone was tipped over and damaged earlier this month after thieves broke into the old Fort Sumner Museum.

De Baca County authorities say other graves in the cemetery were also vandalized and three antique rifles and a shotgun were stolen from the museum.

No arrests have been made.

BETHLEHEM, WEST BANK ? At the Aida Refugee Camp, a few blocks from Israel?s separation wall, is the Al Rowwad Cultural and Theater Center founded by Dr. Abdelfattah Abusrour in 1998 with the philosophy of ?beautiful resistance? against the Israeli power over their land.

Abusrour is part of the first generation of children born to refugee parents in the Aida Refugee Camp, which was established in 1950 between the towns of Bethlehem and Beit Jala. It is now home to around 5,000 inhabitants all descendants from the 1948 expulsion from Palestine.

Abusrour considers himself ?fortunate? to have gotten a scholarship to study in France, where he stayed for nine years and got his master?s and Ph.D in biological and medical engineering. But his heart was always also with theater, painting and photography. He came home with the dream of working with children to help shape the future of a Palestinian state.

The center started working with children in refugee camps in the area of Bethlehem and Bet-Jala, but then spread all over the West Bank with mobile ?beautiful resistance? programs in theater, dance and music training.

Abusrour says he was very eager to tour with the children in the U.S. because it is the richest, most powerful democracy in the world. But he also wanted to show them that even in the biggest democracy, injustice can be found.?

?We took our children to poor areas like Afro-American neighborhoods because it was important for me to show them as Palestinians that there are equal injustices in other places of the world,? he said.

While he appreciates the power of the U.S., Abusrour believes that as a country, it is not living up to its ideals. ?

?The United States of America is a country like any other country. It has its beauty and faults," said Abusrour. He added that it is "the land of free and the brave, apparently, and they are violating the values that they pretend defending.?

For many Palestinians, it is hard to ignore the long-term support the U.S. has given and continues to give Israel for its security. ?Many find it hard to understand how a country like the U.S., which plays a leading role in shaping the policies of other countries, can help Israel?s continuous violation of the Palestinian?s rights.

?As a Palestinian I see that [the U.S.] is supportive of an apartheid system that is suffocating us, that is continuing a violation of human rights and human values that we share as Palestinians,? said Abusrour. ?I see the governments of the United States of America, one after the other, supporting this illegal occupation.??

Rick Ross has been raising the bar from himself with each project since his 2006 debut, Port of Miami. Rozay's most-recent solo album, 2010's Teflon Don, is arguably his best, and for his Maybach Music Group, the Bawse encourages the same growth.

On Tuesday, Ross and his MMG crew dropped Self Made, Vol. 2, 13 months after they released the first volume. If Rozay had to pick a favorite, he said he'd pick the latest — after all, it is all about progression.

"Of course, the difference first and foremost is the sound, the music. When we released Self Made, Vol. 1, we had just really closed our deal. We pretty much did it in two weeks, just sitting around in the studio, just having fun, and we recorded it," Ross shared on Wednesday's (June 27) "RapFix Live."

When MMG released the first Self Made in May 2011, Ross had only secured his label deal with Warner Music Group three months prior, but he, Wale and Meek Mill put it together quickly. This time out, the Bawse expanded his roster, giving Stalley more shine and adding French Montana and former B2K frontman Omarion to the fold.

"This project here, everybody was pretty much in a different position. It's been a big difference status-wise from the first year ['til] now," Ross explained. "Everybody was basically on tour when we first started this process. We stayed in communication a little more, and I think the music itself it sounds straight up organic, like it was meant to be, from the choruses, the concepts, the titles to the sequencing."

Rozay doesn't discount Self Made, Vol. 1, however; he likens it to a seed. Aside from the expanded roster, Ross decided to add a ton of features to the new album as well. T.I., Nas, Bun B, T-Pain, Wiz Khalifa and Kendrick Lamar all appear. "I feel like it's the best of the best, from the new guys to the veterans," Ross said.

You may have heard (or read) that Facebook just changed your email address without even asking you?? and in a way it did?? but the whole thing's not quite as scary or dramatic as it might sound. And you can easily fix things with a few clicks.

Kashmir Hill of Forbes' Not-So Private Parts blog was among the first?to report on the change.?She labeled the whole thing as "Facebook's lame attempt to force its email service on you."

This all sounds scary! What happened?
You see, what happened is that the email address?? or in some cases, addresses?? displayed on your Facebook profile was changed?from whatever it was to your?Facebook email address. (Your Facebook email address consists of whatever is at the end of your Facebook URL slapped in front of @facebook.com. For example: My Facebook URL is http://facebook.com/rosa, so my Facebook email address is rosa@facebook.com.)

For most people, this is pretty darn annoying as all the mail they receive at the Facebook email address winds up in their regular Facebook inbox. In addition to everyone receiving an address, we?re also rolling out a new setting that gives people the choice to decide which addresses they want to show on their timelines.

Ever since the launch of timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we?re extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address.

The spokesperson did not explain why users did not receive any sort of notice when their profiles started displaying a different email address, even though we made sure to ask about that.

Garmin is adding a new product to its line-up of fitness watches, and this one is dedicated to workouts of the aquatic variety. The Garmin Swim tracks your distance swam, average pace, workout time and more, and it uploads those stats to the web to help monitor your progress. Though it's meant to be a part of your exercise routine, the Garmin Swim watch looks like your average plastic digi-timepiece. The watch has six buttons with functions for viewing the time of day, scrolling through the menu options, controlling the timer, viewing the menu and entering workout mode. The setup takes some getting used to, but the illustrative icons on the watch helped us get into the rhythm quickly.

Getting started with the Swim simply entails entering the size of your pool, with options to measure in yards or meters. Once that info is uploaded, you press the swim button and are ready to get splashing. We spent a solid half-hour doing laps, and the Swim duly recognized and recorded that we varied our strokes. Stopping the timer each time we took a break created a new interval for our workout, with a rundown of the elapsed time, distance in meters, number of strokes, type of stroke, total laps, average speed and calories burned. That's a lot of data to pore over, and Garmin lets you wirelessly upload it all to the Garmin Connect site. To do this, you have to pair the watch with your computer using a USB ANT stick: once it works, it's an efficient, easy way to review your workout, but it took us a few tries before our laptop recognized the watch. I keep a very tight control of who I accept on Facebook, I only have names on Facebook who I know and careful who I accept.
Once in a while I go through my friends list, find a few names I don't recognise, it has been suspicious that something is going on, change my password and move on.

This time I found 20 names. When I check on their names it says that their account is deactivated (ALL OF THEM DEACTIVATED).

I KNOW that I did not send or accept friend requests from these people.
I ONLY use Facebook on my own devices (Android with lookout security, iPad with 5.1.1, Laptop running Windows 8 (Built in Security Essentials).
I use a UNIQUE email address ONLY for Facebook logins and notfiications which has been changed since last time I checked through my friends list.
I NEVER use Facebook to authenticate to websites
The ONLY Apps which have approval are Spotify & Instagram.
All other games, apps, etc. have has their permissions revoked since last time I checked through my friends list. I keep a very tight leash on my Facebook "privacy" now.

There was a time, a long long time ago (about 3 years ago), I DID send lots of Friend requests because at low point my my life where I was in a ****ty job and playing Mafia Wars a lot for lack of better things to be doing, including one time I sent friend requests in bulk by email address. Since about 2 years ago, I deleted EVERYONE who I added via. Mafia Wars, and also went into the friend request pending by email section (I don't think they have this page anymore) and DELETED everyone with friend requests outstanding who didn't accept me at the time.

I don't know if this is still a having a ripple effect from the Mafia Wars invites I sent out long ago and maybe only being accepted now. I do have email notifications turned on for when someone wants to Add me as a friend, and for when someone accepts my friend request, and I am not getting such emails to confirm this to be the case.

Maybe this is some other security issue (Hijack control of Facebook from a malicious webpage?) Maybe there is an ongoing security issue? Maybe this is a Facebook bug?

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? A wildfire near Colorado Springs erupted and grew out of control to more than 3 square miles over the weekend, prompting the evacuation of a popular vacation town and the closure of nearby highways Sunday.

At least 11,000 residents of the town of Manitou Springs and nearby communities of Cascade, Chipita Park and Green Mountain Falls were ordered to leave Saturday or early Sunday. The fire quickly grew to more than 2,000 acres amid tinder dry conditions, gusty winds and temperatures that reached into the 90s.

Officials didn't immediately have a count on those evacuated from campgrounds, inns, rental cabins and other vacation properties that were emptied, but an evacuation center set up at a high school housed mostly tourists.

They included Mark Stein of Morristown, N.J., whose family arrived after midnight Sunday at their Manitou Springs hotel for a week of whitewater rafting and sightseeing.

"We were sleeping for 15 minutes when they started knocking on the door ? a day from hell," Stein said of the day of travel. With his wife and 12-year-old son, Stein spent the first night of his vacation setting up cots for more than 100 evacuees who slept at the school.

"I think it's the best vacation ever. This is what the real world is about. There's a lot of people that need help," Stein said.

The fire also prompted evacuations for the west side of Colorado Springs and in the towns of Cascade and Ute Pass, but no structures have been destroyed and no buildings were under immediate threat.

The Garden of the Gods park, which has dramatic red rock formations, was also closed. Pikes Peak, the most-visited high-altitude peak in the nation that inspired the song "America The Beautiful," was completely obscured by gray smoke.

Officials closed traffic into Manitou Springs, a vacation town at the base of Pikes Peak, and shut down the Pikes Peak Highway, which goes to the top of the mountain.

Hundreds of other residents were under voluntary evacuation orders and were packing up, the Colorado Springs Gazette reported Saturday.

About 350 firefighters were dispatched to the blaze, with more in the way, said Rob Deyerberg of the Fairmount Fire Protection District. But the fire was still zero percent contained. A plume of smoke from the foothills near Pikes Peak thickened and turned from light gray to brown.

Conditions remained dry and windy Sunday, and the National Weather Service said temperatures were forecast to be close to 100 degrees throughout much of the state.

Gov. John Hickenlooper said two C-130 military transport planes from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs would assist fighting the fire on Monday. With eight separate wildfire burning across Colorado, Hickenlooper said half the nation's firefighting resources were in the state but that it will take time to put out the blazes.

"People recognize this going to take a big push," Hickenlooper said.

Colorado and other parts of the Southwest have become a tinderbox for wildfires as the region faces extremely dry or prolonged drought conditions. At least seven were burning across the state, where officials have been challenged by one of the most severe fire seasons in recent memory.

The weather also helped fuel another blaze that sparked Saturday and destroyed 21 structures near the mountain community of Estes Park. Investigators were determining whether it started in a cabin or as a wildfire before moving toward the homes, according to the Denver Post.

"Even though we lost 21 (structures), which is a huge tragedy, we saved many homes because of firefighters' efforts," Estes Park Fire Chief Scott Dorman told evacuees.

A separate fire continued burning near Fort Collins, scorching more than 118 square miles and destroying at least 191 homes.

Elsewhere in the West, firefighters made progress against wildfires in Utah, New Mexico and California.

? In Utah, about 2,300 residents were allowed to return to their homes Saturday after officials determined a wildfire no longer posed a threat to homes near Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain. Officials believe that fire was started Thursday by target shooters. A second major fire has burned 16,500-acres of high desert near the central Utah town of Delta.

? In California, a wildfire about 60 miles north of Los Angeles triggered evacuations of campgrounds around an off-road recreation area on Saturday. Ventura County fire officials said the fire has blackened at least 400 acres in the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, along the Interstate 5 corridor in Gorman.

? In New Mexico, a lightning-caused wildfire that destroyed 242 homes and businesses is 90 percent contained after heavy rain helped crews Friday. The 69-square-mile fire near Ruidoso began June 4. Meanwhile, the largest wildfire in state history was 87 percent contained. It has burned more than 464 square miles after two blazes merged on May 16.

Greece seeks to win Germany's respect

GDANSK, Poland (AP) -Now for the really important business between Greece and Germany: Football.

On Friday, thousands of fans from the two nations at opposite ends of the eurozone financial crisis converged on neutral Polish turf for a European Championship quarterfinal match.

For Greece fans, Friday's clash in Gdansk inevitably mixes sports and politics, Euro 2012 and the euro currency. They seek respect for their country after its humiliating economic collapse - and the German government's role in imposing strict austerity measures as a condition of Greece getting ?240 billion ($300 billion) in bailout pledges.

"It's not good that sports and politics are together, but today we have no other choice," Greece fan Michalis Kalotrapesis said, wearing a white national team shirt and tracksuit top. "We are playing for our country and for our image in Europe and all over the world."

Kalotrapesis, and three Greek friends who now live in Germany, drove through the night to support their native nation here. Their pride in performing what they see as a patriotic duty fits into Greece's favored national narrative: In football as in finance, Germany is the traditional power and Greece the spirited underdog.

"We are a little bit crazy, but it's the Greek mentality," said Nikos Barzas, pointing out the bloodshot eyes of the group's designated driver, Georgios Kotiniotis. They left Gifhorn, Germany, at midnight with 750 kilometers (about 465 miles) of roads ahead of them.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will attend the match after morning economic meetings in Italy that were brought forward to help fulfill her role as the supposed lucky charm of the national team.

Barzas is glad she is coming - to further spur the team and 5,000 Greece fans expected to attend the match.

"(The players will) fight a little bit more because (they want) to beat Angela Merkel. (It would be) a little bit of a small kick in Germany's (backside)," he said.

About 15,000 Germans were expected to go to the match, according to the Football Supporters Europe group. Many of the Germans arrived at Gdansk's main train station, where the scalpers' asking price was ?200 (about $250) for a ticket with a face value of ?75 ($95). There didn't appear to be any Greek fans in the market for them.

Cafes in the narrow cobbled street were occupied by either camp of genial beer-drinking fans. As the street filled up and drinks flowed, a large German flag had claimed the iron fence surrounding the ornate Neptune's fountain. Nearby, Greek fans waving an even larger flag occupied the steps leading up the main town hall. On the Motlawa river bank, fans stopped to get their faces painted in team colors, with accordions being played in the background.

Confident German fans could plan ahead of Euro 2012 for a likely quarterfinal in Gdansk. Fans from the Greek Diaspora knew only last Saturday where to head after an upset win over Russia.

"I was actually happy for them (the Greeks) that they finally had something to celebrate," said Stefan Leidig, a Germany fan from Koblenz. "Besides, I hope that they will manage to get out of the crisis at one point."

Two days after being sworn into office, the prime minister of Greece's new conservative-led coalition government is staying at home to work.

Antonis Samaras, a Harvard-educated former finance minister, is better employed stabilizing the country after a tense election last weekend than cheerleading at a football match, fan Thomas Nikolopulos said.

"I'm glad they are at home," said Nikolopulos, who arrived on a morning flight from London.

Before Samaras met with lawmakers in Athens on Friday afternoon, he could read headlines fueling national wishes to repel German policy on the field: "Bankrupt Them!" read Greek paper SportDay, as Derby News repeated the Spartan motto "Come and Get it."

In Germany, the best-selling daily Bild led with: "Bye bye Greece; we can't rescue you today."

Nikolopulos, who is originally from Athens, said the feeling back home is that "Germany has put them in the corner" over the euro currency crisis.

"This is Greece's opportunity to stand up and try to go back to being historical wonders," he said, with a blue-and-white striped national flag draped across his shoulders.

Greece fans takes faith in their team's surprise run to be Euro 2004 champion, founded on the same solid defense and dogged resistance shown by the current team in Poland. For three-time European champion Germany, the match seems more routine - aiming for its fourth straight semifinal at each World Cup and Euro since Greece's golden year.

"For me, it's a normal football match," said German fan Klaus Lehmkuhl, a technical consultant from Muenster. "I don't think the politics is important for the German team."

Still, some off-field tensions are expected when the German national anthem is played minutes before kickoff. And if images of Merkel sitting next to UEFA President Michel Platini in the VIP seats are shown on the stadium giant screens?

"There will be massive boos. I can't see there not being some," said Yiannis Televantibes, a real estate agent from London. "But there's no problem between the fans."

In Berlin, thousands of football fans waving German flags flooded the area in front of the landmark Brandenburg Gate. Organizers of the public viewing event said they expected around 400,000 to turn out to watch the match on large screens.

Earlier, a German deputy government spokesman was peppered with questions about the match and asked whether Merkel would feel the need to tone down any goal celebrations, because of the eurozone crisis.

"I think it depends a bit on how the game goes, but I think you will see that she is glad if there's a goal on the right side," Georg Streiter said.

Streiter also shrugged off a question as to whether Merkel would consider herself partly responsible if German loses.

"I think you would be loading up the chancellor, who already has plenty of packages to carry, with an unjustified package," he said. "She's a spectator."

NEW YORK (AP) ? A Florida dealer of fossils who acquired a dinosaur skeleton that the government plans to seize Friday says he wants others to develop a love of science and is "not some international bone smuggler."

Eric Prokopi (proh-KAHP'-ee) struck back Thursday at the U.S. government's account of the dinosaur fossils it seeks to hand over to Mongolia.

The Gainesville, Fla., commercial paleontologist says in a statement obtained by The Associated Press that the government wrongly claimed he misrepresented the skeleton's value. He says import documents were not fraudulent. He says the skeleton was loose, mostly broken bones and rocks with embedded bones before he made it a practically complete, mounted skeleton.

He says efforts to take away the skeleton have led him "toward financial ruin."

The government declined to comment Thursday.
