Chromium OS gets ported to Raspberry Pi
Hexxeh has already proven his love for Chromium OS and the Raspberry Pi, obviously the next step was for the hacker to combine his passions into one project. Thus was born Chromium OS for the tiny ARM-powered computer from the UK. The initial commit of the port was officially approved by the Chromium team, meaning that anyone lucky enough to get their mitts on the board can download the code themselves. Of course, there's a long road to hoe before we see a stable version -- if we ever see such a thing. Right now the OS does little more than boot up, but if the embedded version of Chromium can be made to function without issue it could make browsing the web on the Broadcom SOC-sporting PC much less painful. Then again, performance is a big question mark. Seeing how much the 700MHz ARM11 chip struggled with the Midori browser, we wouldn't hold our breath for miracles. Then again, the underlying system is far less demanding than a full fledged Linux distro with a desktop. Hit up the source link to download Chromium OS for the Raspberry Pi yourself.

Acer Aspire Timeline Ultra M5 Ultrabooks with Kepler graphics coming to the US for $680-plus
We spotted Acer's new Aspire Timeline Ultra M5 laptops at Computex earlier this month, and though we already knew some key specs (NVIDIA's Kepler-based graphics, for example), these Ultrabooks hadn't yet been announced for the US market. Today that changes, as Acer just revealed full specs and pricing details for those of us here in the states.
The Aspire Timeline Ultra M5, available with 14- and 15-inch screens, lives up to its Ultrabook classification with a 0.81-inch thick profile and up to eight hours of battery life. As we noted previously, the M5 maintains some of the Aspire M3's design cues, including the chiclet keyboard, 1366 x 768 display and thin silhouette. At the same time, it ups the premium quotient with aluminum alloy done up in a brushed-metal finish. All models include a DVD drive and 500GB of storage plus a 20GB SSD.
The base configuration will feature a second-gen (read: Sandy Bridge) Intel processor clocked at 1.5GHz, but higher-level options step up to an Ivy Bridge CPU clocked as high as 2.6GHz. The 14-inch version weighs 4.3 pounds and starts at $680 with Intel HD Graphics 4000 but is also available with an NVIDIA GeForce GT640M LE GPU for $780. The $830 15.6-inch M5 features an edge-to-edge screen, along with that same NVIDIA chip, but it weighs a heftier 5.07 pounds. The Aspire Timeline Ultra M5 Series will ship at the end of June -- in the meantime, check out the photos and press info below.

Is big fame over for Hanks, Witherspoon?

A bold claim sits in the midst of a lengthy new piece in The New Yorker about Ben Stiller, "Funny is Money: Ben Stiller and the dilemma of modern stardom." The author, Tad Friend, contends that "plenty of people who were big stars 10 years ago now are not." Fair enough on the surface, right? Well, take a look at the list Friend posits: Keanu Reeves, Mel Gibson, Demi Moore, Tom Hanks, Reese Witherspoon, Russell Crowe, Nicolas Cage, John Travolta.
Someone deigns to suggest that Tom Hanks is no longer a star? What? And why are we counting down the days until Witherspoon has her third baby?if she's not a star? Friend's proclamation seems to exist where two main tenets -- the definition of a star and the perception of who is a star -- intersect. "A star, to the industry, is someone who can dependably get a film to 'open,'" Friend wrote. "A star to the rest of us, is the person our eyes are always drawn to on screen."
To that end, some of the names on the list do make sense. Demi Moore, sure. Her last big film, "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" was definitely a disappointment, and she hasn't had top billing on anything substantial since "G.I. Jane."
Reeves is almost 10 years removed from "Matrix Revolutions" and "Matrix Reloaded," which both opened in 2003 and made a combined $420 million domestically. But, "Revolutions" made only $48 million its opening weekend, perhaps an indicator that he wasn't carrying films like he once was.
Crowe is a slightly more complicated case: "3:10 to Yuma" in 2007 definitely didn't light the box office on fire (it grossed only $70 million worldwide) but doesn't the film's two Academy Award nominations count for something? (On a side note, Crowe does have nearly half a million Twitter followers. If Crowe and the studios he's working with can harness this following for any of the five films he's got coming up between now and 2014, maybe his star rises somewhat?)
Mel Gibson, with all his ancillary controversies might be in a category all his own, but even if you set his temper?aside and look at the numbers, Gibson hasn't had a film open at the No. 1 spot since "Signs" in 2002. It seems certain that Gibson has become more spectacle than star and once the scales tip in that direction, it's tough to get them back.
The names on the list that maybe deserve some special dispensation are Witherspoon, Cage and Hanks. As Witherspoon's pregnancy tracking proves, you can still have star quality without a massive box office hit. Her most recent film, "Water for Elephants"? "This Means War" made $54 million domestically, but if you look at her last 10 years' worth of films, even the biggest hit, "Sweet Home Alabama," was only a $127 million movie. We aren't talking about a leading actress who was opening billion-dollar franchises and suddenly isn't covering the budget. Witherspoon is just a solid, steady star (with an Oscar under her belt) which will likely give her career serious longevity.
As for Cage: his "Saturday Night Live" persona might be the most interesting thing he's got going right now, but that's just here in the United States, where his films don't do nearly as well as they do internationally. Did you see "Season of the Witch"? Me neither, but enough people saw it in foreign markets that it earned $66 million there, while the film only made $24 million at home.
And then there's Tom Hanks. The man who made "Big" big, and led "Toy Story" to hold the title of most successful animation franchise, ever -- he will always be a star, even if "Larry Crowne" was unwatchable for vast, vast swaths of the population. And maybe that's the thing about stardom: once yours shines brightly enough, it never totally fizzles out. If you are able to remain "the person our eyes are always drawn to on screen," what's on the screen isn't always of paramount importance.

Finance minister defends RBI, 'India Inc' dismayed
While Indian finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee, sought to defend the Indian central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), decision to keep key interest rates unchanged in its monetary policy review, corporate India was disappointed and expressed dismay that the apex bank has missed ?the bigger picture?.
According to Mukherjee, inflation weighed on the mind of the RBI in its decision to keep key interest rates unchanged. High inflation numbers "might have influenced their [RBI?s] decision-making process. And normally in mid-quarter review, it is not necessary for the governor to consult the minister,? Mukherjee told reporters.
India Inc (Indian firms) slammed RBI?s ?inflation-centric policy? to keep interest rates unchanged, with the Confederation of Indian Industry director general, Chandrajit Banerjee, saying the central bank has missed the bigger picture at a time ?when millions of livelihoods are under threat due to declining GDP growth?.
In a scathing attack on the RBI, Ficci said: ?The RBI decision to not reduce the repo rate is even more difficult to understand in light of its own admission that the persistence of overall inflation both at the wholesale and retail levels, in the face of significant growth slowdown points to serious supply bottlenecks and sticky inflation expectations.?
The RBI, however, defended its decision of not tinkering with the rates, saying in the current growth-inflation dynamics, several factors were responsible for the slowdown in activity, particularly in investment, "with the role of interest rates being relatively small?.
It is not clear at all how the supply bottlenecks and high levels of vegetables and protein prices, which is the main cause of persistent inflation, will be tackled by keeping interest rates high, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) said.
Due to lack of reforms, coupled with continued high interest rate policy of the RBI, the economy is headed for a long period of ?slowflation? which will bring us closer to a major crisis, the chamber added.
"Therefore, a cut in the repo rate would have been very timely and may have provided some boost to the already flagging growth,? Ficci said.
"A cut in the policy rates could have given some boost to the industrial sector, particularly when the growth rates had plummeted to 5.3 per cent in the last quarter,? said Rajkumar Dhoot, president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).
Unsettled global economic outlook and tight monetary stance by the RBI have weighed on the investment scenario and overall growth prospects of the Indian economy, said Sandip Somany, president, PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The tight monetary policy stance will lead to a period of stagnation and falling business confidence in the Indian economy, he said.

MARK Cavendish?s determination to win gold on the opening day of the Olympics means he is ready to sacrifice stage victories at the Tour de France.
The world champion will be perfectly placed for the final sprint along The Mall having adapted his training programme to meet the rigours of the London 2012 road race.
Cavendish, a bunch sprint expert, has 20 Tour de France stages to his name, but the smaller Olympic field requires more than just raw speed to take top spot on the podium.
With Team Sky looking mainly at helping Bradley Wiggins with the Tour de France, his team-mate Cavendish is focusing on the Olympics.
?In cycling the Olympics doesn?t rank highly, it is not a prestigious event, but as a Great Britain athlete to compete for the flag I was born under, is a big thing,? Cavendish said.
?It brings extra motivation. That is why I am changing (my training). I will not be as successful in the Tour de France as I have been in the past.
?I will win stages but I may not win five. My sprint has suffered a little bit but the guys who are sprinters like I was won?t be there in the finish (of the Olympics).
?It is not going to be a bunch sprint. There will be a group of less than 50 riders at the finish and I have to be there with those guys.
?The most important part of what I have been doing is getting to the finish.
?I am so much faster than the others anyway I can afford to lose a few percent in the sprint in order to be able to get to the line.
?It is worth it this one year, especially when the team is concentrating on the GC. It is worth doing that for the Olympics.?
