Noise-induced hearing loss linked to hunting - KFDA ...

Amarillo, TX - Noise-induced hearing loss is becoming more common in the Texas panhandle all because of a favorite past time.

Wise Hearing Solutions tells us 90-percent of their patients have a noise induced hearing loss, with a?majority of those cases being from hunting or firing a gun.

That's why they?are urging everyone to protect their ears in loud environments.

"If you were firing a gun, as soon as that gun goes off it's going to shut the whole thing down," says Burnie Stokes, Panhandle Gunslingers.

At Panhandle Gunslingers, wearing ear protection is not an option.

There are different types that more appropriate for different types of fire-arms.

"You know a lot of guys will say, 'they?get in my way, I'm just going to go out here with the foam earplugs.' Well those will probably work with a .22 rifle or some of the smaller calibers but with your bigger hunting rifles, you really need something to protect?the ear," says Burnie Stokes, Panhandle Gunslingers.

Area audiologists say even a single shot can have long lasting affects on your hearing.

"Gunfire can be as loud as 120-130 decibels. 85 decibels is kind of our limit to exposure, to where it becomes hazardous. When you're exposed for long periods of time to a loud sound, that's when it can cause damage to your hearing," says Diana Wise-McPherson, Audiologist, Wise Hearing Solutions.

Those using a shotgun or a rifle may have one ear more exposed than the other depending on how the gun is held, but noise induced hearing loss can affect both ears.

"Noise-induced hearing loss is a huge problem, we see probably one in three people have noise-induced hearing loss," says Diana Wise-McPherson, Audiologist, Wise Hearing Solutions.

Wise Hearing Solutions has also seen patients who develop a temporary shift in hearing which will cause?a ringing sound or muffled noise in your ear.

In this situation your normal hearing will typically bounce back within a few days.

But once you develop any type of hearing loss, you cannot?regain it.?

You can only help slow down the process.

"If there is a chance that a hearing aid can be beneficial to help you hear better, that's fantastic. Anytime you're exposed to loud noise and you have a hearing loss, your chances are greater that you're going to lose more hearing. So protect what you have and wear your hearing protection," says Diana Wise-McPherson, Audiologist, Wise Hearing Solutions.

Lenovo announces ThinkPad Edge Twist, a business-oriented convertible coming this month for $849

Lenovo announces ThinkPad Edge Twist, a business-oriented convertible coming this month for $849

Lenovo was first out of the gate with a form-shifting Windows 8 machine when it unveiled the IdeaPad Yoga at CES. Now the company's back with a convertible for its business customers, the ThinkPad Edge Twist. In many ways, it's a convertible in the most conventional sense of the word: unlike the Yoga, whose screen folds all the way back, the Twist has a 12.5-inch display that can swivel all the way around and fold down into tablet mode. As a member of the Edge family, in particular, it blends design elements from Lenovo's business and consumer lines, with metal accents, rounded edges, an island-style keyboard, a magnesium frame and, of course, that signature soft-touch finish.

Stealing the show is that 12.5-inch, 350-nit, Gorilla Glass-coated display, which uses IPS technology for wider angles. On the inside, the Twist runs your choice of a Core i5 or i7 processor, with up to 8GB of RAM and either a 128GB SSD or a 7,200RPM hard drive (320GB or 500GB). Battery life, meanwhile, is rated at up to seven hours. At 3.48 pounds, it's heavier than some larger-screened Ultrabooks, but at least that 0.79-inch frame makes room for a full-sized Ethernet jack. (It also has a memory card reader, two USB 3.0 ports, mini-HDMI output and a mini-DisplayPort.) As for business-friendly features, the laptop offers TPM and can be configured with an optional 3G radio. Look for it on October 26th, starting at $849. Until then, enjoy those hands-on shots below.

Sprint adds two phones, a tablet and a USB dongle to its LTE line-up

Sprint adds two phones, a tablet and a USB dongle to its LTE line-up

If simple vanity trinkets don't excite you, Sprint has something else to tempt you in -- four new LTE devices. The new line-up includes two phones, a tablet and a USB dongle, so hopefully something for everyone. The phones? the Optimus G (as we suspected) and Mach, both by LG. If you need a little more screen real-estate, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 will be joining the other Koreans on the good ship sprint too. Happy with your notebook, and just want the service? Sprint's adding a Plug-in-Connect USB dongle to the menu too. Now deets on cost and dates we're afraid, with "fall" being all the info we've got right now. Feel free to delve into the PR after the break, though, in the meantime.

(AP) ? Skydiver Felix Baumgartner's attempt at the highest, fastest free fall in history Tuesday is more than just a stunt.

His planned 23-mile dive from the stratosphere should provide scientists with valuable information for next-generation spacesuits and techniques that could help astronauts survive accidents.

Jumping from more than three times the height of the average cruising altitude for jetliners, Baumgartner hopes to become the first person to break the sound barrier outside of an airplane. His team has calculated that to be 690 mph based on the altitude of his dive.

His medical director Dr. Jonathan Clark, a NASA space shuttle crew surgeon who lost his wife, Laurel Clark, in the 2003 Columbia accident, says no one knows what happens to a body when it breaks the sound barrier.

"That is really the scientific essence of this mission," said Clark, who is dedicated to improving astronauts' chances of survival in a high-altitude disaster.

Clark told reporters Monday he expects Baumgartner's pressurized spacesuit to protect him. If all goes well and he survives the death-defying jump, NASA could certify a new generation of spacesuits for protecting astronauts, and provide an escape option, from spacecraft at 120,000 feet.

Currently, spacesuits are certified to protect astronauts to 100,000 feet, the level reached by Joe Kittinger in 1960 when he set the current free-fall record by jumping from an open gondola 19.5 miles high. Kittinger's speed of 614 mph was just shy of breaking the sound barrier at that altitude.

But whether Baumgartner, a 43-year-old Austrian military parachutist and extreme athlete, can attempt the jump depends on New Mexico's often unpredictable weather.

Winds from a cold front already delayed the jump by a day. Even the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, 200 miles to the north, was forced to delay by a day its mass ascension of more than 500 balloons over the weekend. Baumgartner's jump can only be made if winds on the ground are less than 2 mph.

Midday Monday, the team remained optimistic for liftoff. The best window for the week was Tuesday and Wednesday, before another front is expected to move in.

Baumgartner is to be lifted into the stratosphere beginning around 7 a.m. MDT by a helium balloon that will stretch 55 stories high. Once he reaches his target altitude, he will open the hatch of his capsule and make a gentle, bunny-style hop.

Any contact with the capsule on his exit could tear the pressurized suit. A rip could expose him to a lack of oxygen and temperatures as low as minus 70 degrees. It could cause potentially lethal bubbles to form in his bodily fluids, a condition known as "boiling blood."

There are also risks he could spin out of control, causing other risky problems.

Despite the horrifying hazards of the dive, he and his team of experts say they have confidence in their built-in solutions and have a plan for almost every contingency. The spacesuit and capsule were tested in two early skydiving practice runs, one from 15 miles up in March and 18 miles in July.

Baumgartner, who has made more than 2,500 jumps from planes, helicopters, landmarks and skyscrapers, has been preparing for this leap for five years.

He spent Monday in his hotel room, preparing himself mentally and talking with his parents, his girlfriend and four friends, team members said. It was his mother's first trip to the United States from her Austrian home.

The venture is being sponsored by energy drink maker, Red Bull, which has funded other extreme athletic events. The company won't say how much the project, called Stratos for stratosphere, is costing.

The organizers say there are some 30 video and still cameras to record the jump, including five attached to Baumgartner's pressure suit, along with cameras from the capsule, on the ground and a helicopter.

Red Bull has been promoting a live Internet stream of the event at http://www.redbullstratos.com/live , from all cameras except those on Baumgartner's body. But organizers said there will be a 20-second delay in their broadcast of footage in case of a tragic accident.

After 25 years of skydiving, Baumgartner promises this jump will be his last.

He says he plans to settle down with his girlfriend and fly helicopters on mountain rescue and firefighting missions in the U.S. and Austria.

Human rights activist arrested by Algerian police

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) ? A member of a leading human rights organization has been beaten and arrested in a southern Algerian city.

The lawyer for Yacine Zaid said Tuesday that his client had been punched and beaten by police when they arrested him at a road block in Ouargla , 700 kilometers (435 miles) south of the capital. The lawyer, Sidhoum Mohamed Amine, said Zaid was arrested Monday on the ground that he had shown a lack of respect for police.

The daily El Watan reported that Zaid would go on trial Monday for "humiliating" and "striking a police officer." The paper quoted an eyewitness, Abdelmalek Aibek Eg Sahli, a representative of a hotel union, as saying that Zaid "wasn't aggressive and I don't see why he is accused of that."

Amine said in an interview with The Associated Press that police often use "verbal aggression" to justify an arrest.

Zaid, a well-known blogger, is a member of the Algerian League for the Defense of Human Rights. He was detained in Algiers on Sept. 25 after a support rally for another human rights militant on a hunger strike, but later released.

New fanged dwarf dinosaur from Africa ate plants

ScienceDaily (Oct. 3, 2012) ? With tiny 1-inch long jaws, a new species of plant-eater has come to light in rocks in South Africa dating to the early dinosaur era, some 200 million years ago. This ?punk-sized? herbivore is one of a menagerie of bizarre, tiny, fanged plant-eaters called heterodontosaurs, or ?different toothed reptiles,? that were among the first dinosaurs to spread across the planet.

The single specimen of the new species was originally chipped out of red rock in southern Africa in the 1960s and discovered in a collection of fossils at Harvard University by Paul Sereno, paleontologist and professor at the University of Chicago and National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence. Details of the dinosaur?s anatomy and lifestyle are part of a monograph by Sereno dedicated to these puny herbivores and published in the online journal ZooKeys.

Named Pegomastax africanus, or ?thick jaw from Africa,? the new species had a short parrot-shaped beak up front, a pair of stabbing canines, and tall teeth tucked behind for slicing plants. The tall teeth in upper and lower jaws operated like self-sharpening scissors, with shearing wear facets that slid past one another when the jaws closed. The parrot-shaped skull, less than three inches long, may have been adapted to plucking fruit.

?Very rare,? admits Sereno, ?that a plant-eater like Pegomastax would sport sharp-edged, enlarged canines? like that of a vampire. Some scientists have argued that consuming meat or at the least insects was a good part of the diet of heterodontosaurs, which evolved near the root of the great bird-hipped radiation of dinosaurs that includes the famous plant-eaters Triceratops and Stegosaurus.

Self-defense and competitive sparring for mates is more likely their role, argues Sereno in the study, based on microscopic examination of the teeth of Pegomastax and kin. Wear facets and chipped enamel suggest that the fangs of Pegomastax and other heterodontosaurs were used like those of living fanged deer for nipping or even digging rather than slicing flesh.

A bizarre covering of bristles, something like that of a porcupine, likely covered most of the body of Pegomastax, which measured less than two-feet in length and weighed less than a housecat. These bristles first came to light in a similar-sized heterodontosaur, Tianyulong, discovered recently in China and described in the study. Buried in lake sediment and covered by volcanic ash, Tianyulong preserves hundreds of bristles spread across its body from its neck to the tip of its tail. In life, dwarf-sized heterodontosaurs like Pegomastax would have scampered around in search of suitable plants, says Sereno, looking something like a ?nimble two-legged porcupine.?

When Pegomastax lived some 200 million years ago, the supercontinent Pangaea had just begun to split into northern and southern landmasses. Heterodontosaurs appear to have divided similarly, the study argues, the northern species with simple triangular teeth like Tianyulong and the southern species with taller crowns like Pegomastax.

Sereno marvels at these punk-sized early herbivores that spread across the globe. Although virtually unknown to the public, ?Pegomastax and kin were the most advanced plant-eaters of their day.?

Can Exercise Make Us Smarter? | Greatist

These days, intelligence isn?t just a product of late-night study sessions or listening to Rosetta Stone on repeat. It turns out there?s also a convincing link between exercise and cognitive function, which could motivate people to hit the gym to bulk up the body and the brain.

Running Stairs

Photo:?Bigstock

Burpees for Brain Power? ? Why It Matters

There?s no shortage of research (of mice and men) that uncovers a connection between exercise and the brain[][][]. One study discovered mice that ran every night for six-weeks doubled the size of their hippocampus, a part of the brain associated with memory and learning[]. (It?s unclear how long these results lasted, though.) A small experiment with 30-somethings also found a link between cardio workouts and hippocampus growth after three months of regular aerobic exercise[].

In two experiments with college students, acute and high-impact cardio exercise was linked to increased vocabulary learning and reaction time[][]. (No flash cards necessary!) Other studies show adults? brain-processing speed and memory improved after half an hour of moderate exercise[][]. And don?t just hit the roads: Research also suggests?strength training?not only builds muscle ? it can?boost cognitive functioning, too[].

So how exactly does hitting the gym translate to a better brain? While the connection between burpees and the brain is not fully understood, studies have found that exercise (both aerobic and anaerobic) could jump-start neurogenesis, aka BDNF ? which is linked to learning and is responsible for populating the brain with neurons[][][][]. Fancy, huh?

Genius Gym Rat ? The Answer/Debate

Before we blow off the books for the bike, we should hit the gym with a side of smart skepticism.?There is still a lot of grey matter (pun intended!) when it comes to intelligence and its link to exercise. While research does show a clear connection between hitting the gym and brain function, it?s unclear how much time at the gym is needed to boost brainpower, and whether the brainy effects of exercise are immediate or can have long-term results.

So while hitting the gym may not immediately make us smarter, it could boost productivity to help people get more work done. Exercise can also boost energy levels and focus, which theoretically could motivate us to hit the books. The bottom line? A little exercise is never a bad thing, and could not only make you stronger, but smarter too.

Lost in migration: Earth's magnetic field overdue a flip

LONDON | Wed Oct 3, 2012 3:18pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - The discovery by NASA rover Curiosity of evidence that water once flowed on Mars - the most Earth-like planet in the solar system - should intensify interest in what the future could hold for mankind.

The only thing stopping Earth having a lifeless environment like Mars is the magnetic field that shields us from deadly solar radiation and helps some animals migrate, and it may be a lot more fragile and febrile than one might think.

Scientists say earth's magnetic field is weakening and could all but disappear in as little as 500 years as a precursor to flipping upside down.

It has happened before - the geological record suggests the magnetic field has reversed every 250,000 years, meaning that, with the last event 800,000 years ago, another would seem to be overdue.

"Magnetic north has migrated more than 1,500 kilometres over the past century," said Conall Mac Niocaill, an earth scientist at Oxford University. "In the past 150 years, the strength of the magnetic field has lessened by 10 percent, which could indicate a reversal is on the cards."

While the effects are hard to predict, the consequences may be enormous. The loss of the magnetic field on Mars billions of years ago put paid to life on the planet if there ever was any, scientists say.

Mac Niocaill said Mars probably lost its magnetic field 3.5-4.0 billion years ago, based on observations that rocks in the planet's southern hemisphere have magnetisation.

The northern half of Mars looks younger because it has fewer impact craters, and has no magnetic structure to speak of, so the field must have shut down before the rocks there were formed, which would have been about 3.8 billion years ago.

"With the field dying away, the solar wind was then able to strip the atmosphere away, and you would also have an increase in the cosmic radiation making it to the surface," he said.

"Both of these things would be bad news for any life that might have formed on the surface - either wiping it out, or forcing it to migrate into the interior of the planet."

RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW

Earth's magnetic field has always restored itself but, as it continues to shift and weaken, it will present challenges - satellites could be more exposed to solar wind and the oil industry uses readings from the field to guide drills.

In nature, animals which use the field could be mightily confused - birds, bees, and some fish all use the field for navigation. So do sea turtles whose long lives, which can easily exceed a hundred years, means a single generation could feel the effects.

Birds may be able to cope because studies have shown they have back-up systems that rely on stars and landmarks, including roads and power lines, to find their way around.

The European Space Agency is taking the issue seriously. In November, it plans to launch three satellites to improve our fairly blurry understanding of the magnetosphere.

The project - Swarm - will send two satellites into a 450 kilometre high polar orbit to measure changes in the magnetic field, while a third satellite 530 kilometres high will look at the influence of the sun.

DESCENT INTO CHAOS

Scientists, who have known for some time the magnetic field has a tendency to flip, have made advances in recent years in understanding why and how it happens.

The field is generated by convection currents that churn in the molten iron of the planet's outer core. Other factors, such as ocean currents and magnetic rocks in the earth's crust also contribute.

The Swarm mission will pull all these elements together to improve computer models used to predict how the magnetic field will move and how fast it could weaken.

Ciaran Beggan, a geomagnetic specialist at the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh, said studies have also refined our understanding of how the field reverses.

They have focused on lava flows. When these cool and form crystals the atoms in iron-rich molten rock align under the influence of the magnetic field, providing a geological memory of the earth's field.

But that memory looks different in various locations around the world, suggesting the reversal could be a chaotic and fairly random process.

"Rather than having strong north and south poles, you get lots of poles around the planet. So, a compass would not do you much good," said Beggan.

While the whole process takes 3,000-5,000 years, latest research suggests the descent into a chaotic state could take as little as 500 years, although there are significant holes in scientific understanding.

"Although electricity grids and GPS systems would be more vulnerable, we are not really sure how all the complex things that are linked together would react," Beggan said.

For elephants, deciding to leave watering hole demands conversation

ScienceDaily (Oct. 2, 2012) ? In the wilds of Africa, when it's time for a family of elephants gathered at a watering hole to leave, the matriarch of the group gives the "let's-go rumble" -- as it's referred to in scientific literature -- kicking off a coordinated and well-timed conversation, of sorts, between the leaders of the clan.

First, the head honcho moves away from the group, turns her back and gives a long, slightly modulated and -- to human ears -- soft rumble while steadily flapping her ears. This spurs a series of back and forth vocalizations, or rumbles, within the group before the entire family finally departs.

This curious behavior, measured and documented in a study published in the October issue of Bioacoustics, shows how this cognitively advanced species uses well-coordinated "conversations" to initiate cooperation within the group, said lead author Caitlin O'Connell-Rodwell, PhD, a field biologist and instructor in otolaryngology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. The use of "rumbles" to initiate departure helps explain the group's ability to work together to achieve more complicated tasks, such as rescue operations to save a calf from drowning.

"These vocalizations facilitate the bonds between the elephants to be able to work together," said O'Connell-Rodwell, who has been studying African elephants in the wilds for 20 years. "It's the measure of an organized society. It demonstrates how another social animal grouping organizes itself through vocalizations."

The study also indicates how this behavior uses rumbles in a structured way to transmit signals longer distances both through the air and through ground vibrations that could alert other elephant family groups not to approach the watering hole until they're gone, thus avoiding the mass chaos of too many large, noisy bodies at the same watering hole at the same time.

"I've seen 200 to 300 elephants at the same watering hole at one time before. There's a lot of vocalization and pushing and shoving and screaming and roaring. You can see why they'd want to avoid that," she said.

O'Connell-Rodwell has studied the elephants of the Mushara area of Etosha National Park in Namibia for 20 years, spending most of her summers hunkered down in a bunker or perched atop a tower cataloging more than 170 identified bulls and more than 15 family groups to understand the importance of long distance communication through both the air and ground. She is the author of the nonfiction science memoir, The Elephant's Secret Sense, which highlights her earlier work on elephants' ability to communicate by producing and listening to underground vibrations. She has also written one for children called The Elephant Scientist, which won both the Sibert and Horn Book nonfiction honors.

In this study, O'Connell-Rodwell focuses on sounds. She first noticed this apparent watering hole "departure" conversation years ago while observing the elephants in the wilds. The study occurred between July 1994 and July 1995. Researchers set up scientific observation sites at five watering holes in the Etosha National Park using instrumentation to provide acoustic measurements of the vocalizations and charting behaviors.

They counted the number of vocalizations beginning just as the elephant families arrived at the waterhole up until just after their departure. They found that usually only three of the 15-30 members of the group participated in the "conversations," which fit into the power structure of elephant hierarchies.

"They have a matriarch," O'Connell-Rodwell said. "Then there's this sort of secretary-of-state character, and then you have the general who brings up the rear." The families consist of the females and the calves. Males over the ages of 12 to 15 leave the herd and form their own groups.

She describes the sound of a rumble this way: "It's similar to listening to a truck in the distance. It's really striking, low frequency. You can almost imagine the cycling of the sound wave. It's kind of a throbbing in your chest." The deep sounds also travel by vibrations through the ground.

The study confirmed that elephants use vocalization to coordinate action, and that usually three callers are involved in this very coordinated turn-taking conversation.

"It's not just a chorus," O'Connell-Rodwell said. "As soon as one call ends, another call starts, then the next, then the next. It's connected like a string. Effectively they take a three-second call and turn it into a nine-second call."

The rate of coordinated calling significantly increased after the initiation of departure when compared to the pre-departure period. In an analysis of 14 of these back-and-forth episodes, 33 percent occurred pre-departure and 66.7 percent occurred during departure.

"These bouts increased in number as the elephants departed the waterholes," the study states, indicating that, they "appear to be true communicative events."

The study helps explain how these females can work together to achieve other tasks, said O'Connell-Rodwell, who went on to describe a scene she's witnessed several times as the leaders of a family worked together to save a calf from drowning.

"At our site, we occasionally get newborns falling into the trough. Sometimes the younger mothers get scared and traumatized, they swing their trunk around panicking. They don't know what to do. I've seen the matriarch and another high-ranking female kneel down and wrap a trunk around the baby and pull them out. The little calf is so distraught, the older siblings come and calm him down."

The study also suggests that the use of the longer, repeated calls are a method of communicating messages at a distance to other herds by increasing the length of the signal through both the air and ground. The repetition of this longer signal makes the calls more easily detectible at a distance.

"Most likely they're intending to send a message at a distance," O'Connell-Rodwell said. "It's a great recipe for getting your sound to transmit much further."

O'Connell-Rodwell is drawing analogies between humans and elephants in research conducted with hearing aids at Stanford. The hearing-impaired, she said, are much better at feeling vibrations and could benefit from research like this, which shows how longer, repeated vibratory signals are made and could be more easily detectible.

The study was funded by United States Agency for International Development/World Wildlife Fund-US, Namibia Nature Foundation, the University of California-Davis, Stanford's Bio-X Program, a Stanford faculty grant and the Seaver Institute.

Sunil Puria, PhD, consulting associate professor of mechanical engineering and of otolaryngology, is also an author of the study.

FREE IS MY LIFE: MOVIE REVIEW: Looper

This movie review for "Looper" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

I'm still trying to process my thoughts about Looper (gotta love Thursday night screenings when the movie comes out the next day), but overall it's an interesting movie. It has many parallels to 2000's Frequency, one of my favorite movies, but it also has its own unique storyline. Most of the film occurs in 2044, in Kansas, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt's older self (played by Bruce Willis) is living in 2074; Gordon-Levitt wears?prosthetics?in the film and actually does look like a younger Willis. I would have liked to see more of 2074 - what we get is pretty much a cursory glance - but the events happening in 2044 are definitely interesting enough to hold its audience's attention.

Joe (Gordon-Levitt) is a "looper." In 2074, time travel exists, but is illegal, and the mob uses it to send back people whom they want killed, to "loopers" like Joe, who "do the necessaries," as he says. Each body comes with silver bars which Joe can turn in for money or keep, and they also arrive in 2044 tied up and with a bag over their head; when some of the loopers kill their targets and then find gold bars instead of silver, they know that they've just "closed the loop," or essentially killed their future selves, and have only 30 years left to live. Joe's friend Seth (Paul Dano) has this happen to him, but he finds himself unable to kill his future self; Joe and Seth's employers track down both Seth and his older self, and both Seth and Seth Sr. - SPOILER - meet a gruesome end.

Joe has been hearing rumors that the man who is the boss in 2074, called The Rainmaker, wants all of the loops closed, and that is why more and more loopers have "met" their future selves recently. When Joe's self arrives, it is without a bag over his head, and him and the man (Willis) stare at each other until Willis knocks him out cold and takes off. Joe eventually finds out that Joe Sr. (Willis) wants to kill The Rainmaker, so that none of the bad stuff that has been happening in 2074 will ever happen, and Joe Sr. has narrowed down The Rainmaker to one of three people - all of whom are children.

In the midst of all this, a random fact is thrown out that 10% of the population have an interesting mutation: telekinesis, or TK. Most of the people who have TK aren't great with their abilities - guys use it to impress girls, by levitating quarters - but Joe meets Sara (Emily Blunt, and the first time I've heard her with an American accent!) and her son Cid, both of whom have this power. Cid is one of the candidates that could be Joe Sr.'s "Rainmaker," and Joe Jr. finds himself wanting to protect Cid from Joe Sr.

Confused yet? You'll have to see the movie for yourself to figure out the rest. Bruce Willis barely has any speaking lines in this film, yet he didn't need to have more than he did; he channels his Die Hard?persona and has a lot of particularly awesome action scenes here. He and Joseph Gordon-Levitt work well together, and Gordon-Levitt has good chemistry with Blunt too, although part of their relationship veers off into predictability in one scene. Paul Dano, Piper Perabo, and Jeff Daniels all have small but interesting parts as well, Daniels in particular as someone from the future who runs the loopers' operation in 2044. Pierce Gagnon, who plays the little boy, Cid, was freaky at times and will definitely convince you that he might use his TK "powers" for evil, and not good, some day.

Yes, see this film. It wasn't as?earth-shattering?and original as its Rotten Tomatoes rating led me to believe it would be (92% and 96% from "Top Critics" at the time of this review), but it includes strong performances from all cast members involved and a plot that will leave you wondering about it after the credits have rolled. It's also refreshing to see an "original" movie, as nowadays many of the films in the theater are sequels, and Looper?definitely qualifies as original.

Looper?is in theaters today, September 28th, and is rated R with a runtime of 118 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.

St. Petersburg's 'gay propaganda' law has LGBT Russians wary

The law has resulted in more than 70 arrests, though only one conviction, since being implemented in the spring. But some say it has also galvanized the community to stand up for itself.

By Ann T?rnkvist,?Correspondent, Sven Hultberg Carlsson,?Correspondent / October 1, 2012

Polina Savchenko, of the LGBT rights organization 'Coming Out,' poses for a photo on opening night of Queer Fest 2012 on September 20, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The annual festival began in 2009 with this year's edition the first since the city introduced a law banning homosexual propaganda to minors.

Eight burly guards in black suits ushered guests into an anonymous building on the bank of the Neva River in St. Petersburg, as activists, artists, and diplomats gathered last month for the opening of the city's Queer Fest ? the first time the annual event has been held under the shadow of a new law against "gay propaganda" aimed at minors.

But while the law has largely been used as a club against the city's gay community, some say that it has not done much ? and may even have galvanized the community to stand up for their rights.

The law, signed into effect by St. Petersburg's governor this spring, outlaws "public action aimed at propagandizing sodomy, lesbianism, bisexualism, and transgenderism among minors." Individuals?found guilty face up to a 5,000-ruble fine, about $160. Government officials and businesses?face much higher maximum fines of 50,000 rubles ($1,600) and 500,000 rubles ($16,000) respectively.

According to Agence France-Presse, more than 70 people have been arrested for violating the law, though only one person, high-profile LGBT activist Nikolay Alekseyev, has been convicted. He has admitted to pushing boundaries in order to draw attention to and challenge the law.

Similar laws already existed in a handful of cities. Some proponents in the State Duma have said a?national law would be desirable.

Almost three-quarters of Russians surveyed said homosexuals were immoral or?suffered psychological problems, according to a survey by the research institute?Levada in 2010. Still, almost half of?respondents believed homosexuals had the right to equality with?heterosexual citizens.

Critics say authorities apply the law arbitrarily, often as a handy pretext to clear the streets of demonstrators. Polina Savchenko, from the organization Coming Out St. Petersburg, says. "The police arrest people citing the new law, but once you're in custody they drop those charges for others, such as disorderly conduct."

A chilly environment

The law's wording is unclear regarding what it actually bars, leaving the city's LGBT community to walk on eggshells. The Queer Fest event itself, for example, ? where portraits of lesbians lined the hall's grand staircase and community advocates spoke freely ? was limited to an 18-plus crowd by organizers for fear that it might be classified as propaganda.

Several attendees also noted that they were unsure what the law actually entailed ? though they were afraid of persecution even before it was introduced.

Evolutionary analysis improves ability to predict the spread of flu

ScienceDaily (Oct. 1, 2012) ? With flu season around the corner, getting a seasonal vaccine might be one of the best ways to prevent people from getting sick. These vaccines only work, however, if their developers have accurately predicted which strains of the virus are likely to be active in the coming season because vaccines must be developed in advance of the upcoming flu season. Recently, a team of scientists from Germany and the United Kingdom have improved the prediction methods used to determine which strains of the flu virus to include in the current season's vaccine.

The research describing this advance is published in the October 2012 issue of Genetics.

"Seasonal influenza kills about half a million people per year, but improved vaccines can curb this number," said Michael L?ssig, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Cologne in K?ln, Germany. "Although this study is some distance from direct applications, it is a necessary step toward improved prediction methods. We hope that it helps yield better vaccines against influenza," L?ssig added.

To make this advance, scientists analyzed the DNA sequences of thousands of influenza strains isolated from patients worldwide, dating to 1968. By analyzing this dataset, researchers were able to determine which strains were most successful at expanding into the entire population, and which mutations were least successful in spreading. Using a new statistical method, the researchers found that many more mutations than we thought initially succeed in replicating and surviving. These mutations compete; some make it into the entire population, others die out. This analysis of the virus enables prediction of trends which can help vaccine developers understand the rules of flu virus evolution. This knowledge, in turn, can be used to predict which strains of the virus are most likely to spread through a human population.

"Every year, new concerns emerge about 'super flus' that have the potential to kill many people," said Mark Johnston, Editor-in-Chief of the journal Genetics. "This research itself will not stop any people from getting sick, but it could give us a heads up to particularly dangerous strains that might be on the horizon. With that information, we may be able to develop increasingly effective vaccines."

This work was partially supported by the Wellcome Trust [080711/ Z/06] (N.S.) and by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft grant SFB 680 (to M.L.). This work was also supported in part by the National Science Foundation under grant PHY05-51164 during a visit to the Kavli Institute of Theoretical Physics (University of California, Santa Barbara).
